Progress to Industry 4: Industry 1: Mechanization. E.g. Sewing by hand was replaced with foot operated sewing machines. Industry 2:Electrification. E.g. Foot operated sewing machines were operated by electricity. Industry 3: Digitization. E.g. Online money transfer. Industry 4: Automation. The work is done through automatically operated machines using software programmes, sensors and data generated decisions are made automatically to maximize productivity with minimum human interaction.

Progress to Industry 4 Revolution
Industry 4 emphasizes automated digital solutions that are scalable in an ever-changing business environment. It integrates many aspects of business like product management, asset management, operations management, and manufacturing processes. Thus it creates a path to digital solutions that is value-based. It enables a business to redefine and restructure the business model for optimum return on investment. It has a critical role in the business ecosystem. It converts the physical manufacturing environment of a business unit to a digital ecosystem using IIoT i.e. industrial Internet of Things. It has grown much beyond the first generation of Industry 4. Industry 4 automation works with minimum human to machine interaction to minimize human error and promote excellence in business. Industry 4 helps in making a smooth transition to smart factories by using a scalable solution-based approach that is centered around human needs. Using machine learning it can proactively predict possible interruptions in the manufacturing processes and take appropriate decisions promptly to ensure an uninterrupted product manufacturing. By optimizing the energy required for each stage of product manufacturing, it effectively acts as an energy conservator. It creates a virtual model of the factory to visualize the product line and can give inputs on possible errors of the process so that the model can be improvized and perfected even before the actual manufacturing starts. By identifying industry-specific constraints, it customizes energy requirements as and when required. This is effectively done through sensor inputs and decisions that are driven by big data. By minimizing human interaction, it also reduces worker related redundancy and laxity issues. Industry 4 solutions have percolated into each nook and corner of the smart factories and it will guide us to a bright future.
